Hi, I’m Ian Seguin (Head Coach)

In 2015 I competed in my first powerlifting meet, I immediately fell in love with the community and sport

I began coaching in 2017, helping new lifters on our varsity powerlifting team at Brock University

Fast forward to 2021, Halfway through my master’s degree, I decided to go all in with my coaching and created Adaptive Strength & Performance

Reason for this, working in research and academia was not something I felt as passionate about as I did towards coaching

Competing at a high level for 6+ years has motivated me to help lifters reach their potential and find a passion for training

I have never felt more fulfilled in any career path, my passion to educate and guide lifters to achieve their goals is my ultimate mission

Hi I’m Christian Santos (Coach)

I started powerlifting after high school because I wanted to get stronger and be with like-minded people

After lockdown in 2021, I competed in my first powerlifting meet.
I instantly became hooked to the sport because of the challenges it gives you to be better and the supportive community that's within.

As I continued competing and working with my coach (Ian), I wanted to get into coaching to give people that same guidance.
My philosophy in my coaching is centered around 3 main things:

  1. Individualization

  2. Adaptability

  3. Communication and Support

In addition, my experiences motivated me to help lifters reach their goals & make them the strongest versions of themselves

 Testimonials

Derick Luu (66Kg 1x Open National Champion)

“I’ve been working with Ian at Adaptive for close to 2 years. Throughout this time, I managed to PR on all my lifts while learning to manage multiple injuries. With Ian’s guidance I was able to still train and make progress in spite of the multiple setbacks I’ve encountered. Ian has helped me win my first Canadian Open national title in 2023 which has been a long term dream of mine since I started powerlifting in 2016. As a coach Ian has been collaborative and receptive of the feedback i provide while also not shying away from giving me honest feedback. This collaborative approach has led me to become a stronger version of myself physically and mentally.”

Kris Hanrahan

I joined the Adaptive roster almost two years ago and, at the time, was fairly aimless with my training. I had worked with a few coaches who weren’t really able to deliver on the communication and programming qualities I was looking for. After just a few shorts months of training under Ian, I realized the calibre of coach I was working with.

Since joining Adaptive, we’ve put 70.5kgs on my best total, won several provincial championships and a regional championship, and qualified for/competed at my first CPU nationals (finishing just off of the podium).

When you choose to work with Adaptive, you are choosing to work with a coach who is confident and knowledgeable with regards to programming, fatigue management, and rehabbing injury – all while providing excellent feedback and clear expectations via regular check-ins. Ian also takes the time to educate his clients on their training in order to foster independence; this allows his athletes to make appropriate training decisions and improves the athletes contribution to programming.

If you choose to work with Adaptive, you can trust that you are working with some of the the highest quality coaching in the nation and beyond – don’t waste time, book your consultation now!

Mackenzie Rose (63Kg 2X Junior National Champion)

“Ian teaches through his own example that work ethic and discipline trumps everything. He has shown me that no matter what is going on in your life or at school, you can always show up and do your job.

Ian is a coach who not only cares deeply about the well-being of his clients but also has extensive knowledge on everything fitness and powerlifting related. He makes sure you understand why you’re doing the workouts that you are doing.

Since the time Ian and I have been working together, my form in all lifts has improved tremendously and I never experienced a serious injury. I have added over 300lbs to my total in that time and won the 2020 National Powerlifting Championships. “

Erin Chiasson

“I started getting coaching from Ian after taking several months off of powerlifting training due to chronic recurring injuries. In only a few months, Ian helped me rebuild nearly to my previous best strength level on the lifts that my injury had impacted without reaggravating pain so I could successfully return to the platform. Ian has helped me significantly in improving my mindset and approach towards training, instilling belief in my ability to return to the sport after injury. His knowledge and understanding of powerlifting training was also key, which allowed me to finally break through a 2 year long plateau on bench and take home the national junior bench record in my weight class. I appreciate that he has been able to adapt the plan to my specific needs and is willing to take a creative approach to programming strategies if necessary to find a plan that works for me as an individual.”

Ian has coached me for nearly a year-and-a-half and I enthusiastically
recommend him. His coaching stands out in three ways:
1. Individualization: Ian really focuses on figuring out what each
athlete responds best to. This has been particularly important for me as a masters athlete with significant family and career
responsibilities. Conventional programming-by-template just
doesn’t work for me. By focusing on what I respond to, Ian has
developed an approach that has me setting PR after PR. We do
what works, not what should work in theory.

2. Collaboration: Ian and I work together in developing the approach to my training. He encourages communication and feedback. And
while Ian takes my suggestions seriously and is responsive to them, he is not afraid to tell me when he disagrees me. For me, this is the
perfect balance – I know that Ian values my input, but he is
confident enough to overrule me when I am off-base.

He cares about his athlete’s
results – whenever I hit a PR he is at least as psyched as me. And I
expect there will be many more PRs to come working with Ian and ASP

Phil Rene

I’ve been training for Powerlifting for more than 7 years now. I started to get coached by Ian almost a year ago because my training wasn’t going anywhere. And now I can easily say I’m feeling stronger than ever. Beyond training and programming, what I like the most about my experience with Ian is the coach-athlete relationship we’ve build. Not only is the training adapted to what I need but you can tell Ian cares about my progress as much as I do. As a Powerlifting coach myself I know first hand how difficult communication and online coaching can be sometimes. Ian takes the time to explain the reasoning and theory behind his decision making and he always considers my input. The ASP team is also a great online community where athletes of all levels share the same goal: Get stronger. This high-quality type of coaching makes it easy for me to trust the process and put 110% of my efforts into training.

Christian Santos

“Ian’s probably the definition of a true online coach. Ever since I started with him and Adaptive I’ve always had the support and communication from him, making it more than just programming. His guidance not only helped me become the athlete that ive always wanted to become in powerlifting but he’s also taught me the importance of life outside of lifting and the importance of balance with other life factors. Highly recommend him to anyone of all levels of lifting!”
